[A Dad's Family Car Review] The End of the Trunk Tetris! Why I Chose a BMW 6GT for Our Family of Four

Ever since our second child was born, even a short trip out became a battle against endless amounts of luggage, not to mention the stroller and car seat. Our mid-size sedan's trunk and back seats were simply too small. After getting tired of playing trunk Tetris every weekend, I decided it was time to welcome a new car into our family.

In January 2025, during a brief parental leave, I finally did it. I got a new car: a pre-owned 2021 BMW 6GT 630i, a model that has since been discontinued, making it even more special.

Before making my final decision, I considered three main options: the Lincoln Nautilus, Audi Q7, and Genesis GV80. The Volvo XC90 was also a strong contender. I went to dealerships to see all of them in person and even test-drove the Volvo.

But in the end, none of them made the cut. Here's why I passed on the other cars and chose the BMW 6GT.

My Family Car Contenders: Why They Didn't Make the Cut

1. Lincoln Nautilus

The car itself was great. With a spacious interior and trunk, along with a reasonable price tag for a near-full-size SUV, it was very attractive. However, I ruled it out with a long-term perspective. I concluded that it could be difficult to find parts or get service due to the brand's relatively small presence in the Korean market.

2. Audi Q7

The powerful and solid driving feel was my favorite. I knew how great its TDI engine was, having driven a Volkswagen before. But a lack of certain options in some models and the hassle of booking service appointments with the brand were major turnoffs. Despite its excellent performance, I had to pass on it due to maintenance concerns.

3. Genesis GV80

As a premium Korean SUV, I had high hopes. But when I saw it in person, I was disappointed by the surprisingly small interior space, especially the trunk, which seemed to be a result of its focus on design. While a domestic car has clear advantages in terms of maintenance, it didn't meet our family's need for a truly spacious interior.

4. Volvo XC90

The Volvo XC90 had an outstandingly spacious trunk and interior, along with excellent safety and convenience features worthy of the "Safety First" reputation. However, there were a couple of deal-breakers. The steering felt too light, and more importantly, the weirdly positioned and designed center console just didn't work for me. I couldn't get over the thought of having to look at an interior I wasn't happy with every day.

My Final Choice: Why I Chose the BMW 6GT

After all the deliberation, the 6GT proved to be the perfect family car for us.

  1. A Massive Trunk You Wouldn't Expect from a Sedan

Despite its sedan-like appearance, the 6GT boasts a ridiculously large trunk. It's especially deep, so I can easily fit even bulky items. What's more, it has a liftgate like an SUV, which makes loading and unloading luggage incredibly convenient.

  2. Spacious Interior and a Comfortable Ride

With a length of nearly 5.1 meters and a wheelbase of almost 3 meters, the rear seat space is very generous. It's much easier to get our kids in and out of their car seats, and the ride is comfortable even on long road trips.

  3. Luxury Options Worthy of a 7-Series

Built on the same platform as the 7-Series, the 6GT comes with a range of high-end options like soft-closing doors and a motion-sensing infotainment system. It had all the necessary features for a safe and comfortable family ride.

Of course, I know that for pure comfort, a Carnival Hi-Limousine is the best. But the BMW 6GT was the perfect choice for me, striking a balance between a dad's driving pleasure and the comfort of my family. If you're looking to end the "trunk battle," I highly recommend considering the 6GT as your next family car!
